Requirements: Knowledge of history of art, descriptive geometry.
Goal: Introducing the students to the importance and role of the garment construction technologist in the shaping and manufacture of garments. Establishing a connection between the participants in the creation of a collection: fashion designer, textile designer, modeling expert and tailor.
Outcome: Upon passing the exam, the students will have mastered the classification of clothes. They will be familiar with the basic elements of fashion design and the fashion drawing and its transformation, through all the work stages, into a 3D apparel form.
Contents of the course
Theoretical instruction:
  1. Clothing as a phenomenon. Historic review of the development of clothing.
  2. The function of clothing. Style and aesthetic.
  3. Reasons for clothing: functional, aesthetic, social, class, national identity, sex (gender), emotional, etc.
  4. Classification of clothing: according to gender, season, time of day, character, materials.
  5. Mass produced fashion. High fashion. Differences in manufacturing between the two.
  6. Basic elements of fashion design necessary in communicating with the fashion garment construction technologist: line – shape – texture – tonality – color.
  7. Fashion drawing as a 2D representation of a garment, and its transformation into a 3D apparel form.
  8. Natural canons of the human body – men's, women's and children's figures.
  9. The body – a three-dimensional shape wearing the clothes. The shape of clothes is conditioned by the shape of the body.
  10. Participants in the creation of a collection: fashion designer, textile designer, modeling expert and tailor.
  11. Materials and their characteristics as an important element in planning the shape of the garments.
  12. Visual corrections of the human figure achieved through harmonizing the lines and elements of clothing.
  13. Team work as a necessary element in the creative process of producing a fashion collection.
  14. Presenting a garment collection; scenic representation – fashion shows and commercial reviews in a closed setting.
  15. Presentation in fashion magazines, fashion photography and the use of other media in presentation of clothes.
Practical instruction (Problem solving sessions/Lab work/Practical training):
  1. Proportions of the human body; basic measures; drawing. Natural canons of the human body; drawing. Technical drawings for garments; drawing. The body as a three-dimensional form; draping. Visual correction of the human figure; drawing.
