Durability, Maintenance, Repair and Reconstruction of Buildings Course code: TORO | 4 ECTS credits

Basic information
Level of Studies: Undergraduate applied studies
Year of Study: 1
Semester: 2
Requirements:
Goal: Introducing students to the durability of structures, maintenance, needs for rehabilitation and reconstruction of structures, as well as the ways in which the repair, strengthening and maintenance of structures is performed.
Outcome: Acquired knowledge about the principles, possibilities and methods of maintenance, repair of elements and structures, which can be realized in professional practice.
Contents of the course
Theoretical instruction:
  1. Mechanisms of destruction of concrete, masonry, metal and wooden structures. Influence of design on the durability of structures. Influence of maintenance on the durability of structures. Requirement diagnostics and monitoring of structures. Aesthetic, ecological and ethical influences on the durability of structures. Temporary and auxiliary buildings. Failures, accidents and catastrophes. Risk management. Achieving the durability of structures. Sustainable construction.
  2. Reasons leading to the repair or strengthening of reinforced concrete structures. Repair of damaged reinforced concrete elements and structures. Materials suitable for repair - repair plasters, coatings, carbon strips. Methods to increase adhesion. Crack remediation procedures. Structural repair and reinforcement (methods, details and basics of calculation): reducing the load on structural elements; load transfer to adjacent structural elements of sufficient load-bearing capacity; reducing the range of structures that do not have a satisfactory load-bearing capacity; change of construction system, strengthening of structures by prestressing procedures; remediation by increasing cross-section; strengthening and repair by gluing additional lamellas. Materials for the protection of concrete structures. Technical regulations in the field of repair of concrete structures. Reinforcement of linear elements stressed by bending and transverse forces. Reinforcement of surface elements. Reinforcement of construction elements by changing the static system or voltage state. Pre-stress reinforcement and remediation. Execution of works on repair and strengthening of structures. The importance of maintaining AB structures. Creating a maintenance program. Essential elements of maintenance.
  3. Causes and forms of damage to metal, masonry and wooden structures. Examples of damaged objects, characteristic damages, Requirement assessment. Classification of damages and causes - fires, earthquakes, explosions, overloads, uneven subsidence, humidity, biological influences, chemical influences, mechanical influences, etc. Methods and techniques for damage identification and quantification. Methods, materials and techniques of remediation and protection. Rehabilitation and protection of cultural heritage sites.
Practical instruction (Problem solving sessions/Lab work/Practical training):
  1. Content from theoretical classes translated into practical application through Exercises. Field trip: visual inspection and assessment of the Requirement of the building.
