Semester: 2
Requirements:
Goal: Introduction to the basic materials for the construction of masonry structures and their mechanical characteristics. Acquiring knowledge about the principles of design, load transfer, basics of calculation, construction, construction and repair of damaged masonry buildings.
Outcome: The acquired knowledge in the field of masonry structures in building construction will enable students to independently solve practical design and construction problems in this field.
Contents of the course
Theoretical instruction:
  1. Introduction, historical development and aspects of application of masonry structures. Basic elements for masonry of load-bearing structures, types and technical properties, binders in masonry structures. Masonry techniques and masonry rules (stone, brick, blocks). Rules for the design of masonry structures of buildings, types of masonry structural elements (foundations, walls, pillars, arches, vaults, domes, mezzanine structures), division and types of walls in masonry structures. Design and construction of masonry structures of buildings with details of the design of walls, pillars and mezzanine structures. Load analysis of masonry structures, impact of subsidence and earthquake effect on masonry structures. Design and calculation of structural elements of masonry structures for receiving vertical and horizontal action, with emphasis on the influence of seismic forces. Reconstruction and rehabilitation of masonry buildings (stone and masonry structures).
Practical instruction (Problem solving sessions/Lab work/Practical training):
  1. Introductory exercises from masonry structures. Introduction to the basic elements of masonry structures, elaboration of the basis of masonry structures in building construction with reference to structural details. Practical application of regulations, tabular data and standards for masonry structures. Load analysis, limit states, relevant calculation combinations. Design and calculation of walls and masonry columns for receiving vertical and horizontal loads.
