Concrete Structures in Building Construction Course code: BKUV | 7 ECTS credits

Basic information
Level of Studies: Undergraduate applied studies
Year of Study: 1
Semester: 1
Requirements:
Goal: Expansion of theoretical and practical knowledge on sizing of reinforced concrete structures and training for making complex calculations of buildings in building construction and performing and performing professional supervision during the construction of reinforced concrete structures.
Outcome: Students acquire knowledge and skills for designing structural elements of reinforced concrete structures in buildings and analysis of the behaviour of structural elements and load-bearing systems. Students are trained for independent sizing according to the limit states of bearing capacity and usability.
Contents of the course
Theoretical instruction:
  1. Short renewal of materials from the subjects from the basic professional studies of Concrete Structures I and Concrete Structures II.
  2. Actions on structures and elements. Structural elements of reinforced concrete buildings.
  3. Usability limit states. Shrinkage and creep of concrete.
  4. Beams. Variable height beams. Reinforcement details (joint of beam and column, joint of beam and slab). Checking the limit states of usability of concrete structures: stress, deflection and crack control.
  5. Monolithic mezzanine structures - slabs. Beam and slab deflections. Deflection calculation according to PBAB 87. Display of deflection calculation according to EC2. Calculation of slabs in relation to punching. Semi-prefabricated and prefabricated mezzanine structures.
  6. Cracks. Mechanism of crack formation and propagation. Minimal reinforcement. Crack calculation according to PBAB 87. Display of crack calculation according to EC2. Crack width limitation.
  7. Slender pillars. Elements loaded with longitudinal force and bending moment. Application of diagrams to determine the length of buckling. Wall brackets. Foundations. Single foundations, strip foundations, foundation beams, foundation slabs.
  8. Reinforced concrete structures in high-rise buildings in seismic areas. Design rules. Introduction to the new European standards EN 1998 concerning concrete structures.
Practical instruction (Problem solving sessions/Lab work/Practical training):
  1. Content from theoretical classes translated into practical application through exercises.
