Geodetic Metrology Course code: GMET | 6 ECTS credits

Basic information
Level of Studies: Undergraduate applied studies
Year of Study: 3
Semester: 5
Requirements: Fulfilling minimum of pre-examination requirements from the courses held in the previous semesters especially Measurement uncertainty
Goal: The objective of the course is to revise and systematize previously acquired knowledge in the field of metrology gained through other courses, as well as to acquire new knowledge relating to the inspection, testing and rectification of surveying tools which are used in practice as a methods of measurement with these tools, and which are based on modern theory and practice.
Outcome: With successful mastering the planned curriculum, students acquire knowledge that will be applied in practice, both in planning and in measurement executing. It is necessary to develop awareness of the need for metrological security in all types of geodetic surveying works in both, preparatory works and in measurement execution. Thus the course realizes a part of the educational objective of the academic program Geodesy-Geomatics and students can be successfully engaged in all kinds of practical surveying works.
Contents of the course
Theoretical instruction:
  1. Definition, basic tasks and general terms of geodetic metrology.
  2. General knowledge on standards and criteria. Metrological arrangement and methods for measurement transmission with measurement uncertainty.
  3. Standardization in geodesy. Significance, objectives, division and tasks of standardization. ISO standardization with practical description of standards.
  4. Quality system, basic concepts. Correlation of metrology, standardization and quality systems with practical examples of quality system implementation in a geodetic company.
  5. Metrology of electro-optical rangefinder. Description of mistakes in the process of measuring and method of their reduction and elimination. Standards for inspection of metrological characteristics with their application. Methods of length measurement
  6. Metrology of leveling rod. Standards for thedescriptionof metrological characteristics with their application.
  7. Metrology of measuring tape. Standards for the descriptionof metrological characteristics with their use.
  8. Metrology of theodolite. Review of mistakes in the measuring process and method of their reduction and elimination. Standards for the description of metrological characteristics with their application. Methods for measuring angles.
  9. Metrology of leveling apparatus. Review of mistakes in the process of measuring and method of their reduction and elimination. Standards for thedescription of metrological characteristics with their application. Methods of height difference measurement.
  10. Metrology of a GPS receiver. Reviewof mistakes in the process of measuring and the method of their reduction and elimination. Standards for the descriptionof metrological characteristics with their application. Methods of measurement with GPS receivers.
  11. Fundamentals of statistical data processing and quality measurement control.
Practical instruction (Problem solving sessions/Lab work/Practical training):
  1. All exercises are practical and are held with two classes per week in metrology lab and, if necessary, on the field. Each section has up to six members who work on one practical exercise each.
