Requirements: Knowledge of general culture and art, costume design, apparel design and garment modeling.
Goal: Introducing students to contemporary conceptual fashion design practices: different ways of transposing apparel forms based on the principle of mutually permeated artistic media used for expressing and presenting a fashion product, whereas a garment is seen as an object which is questioning the concept of the author. Further development of design skills and the creative potential of the students through questioning the aspects of concept, context, adaptation, reconstruction, deconstruction of the old and the application of new patterns of transposition for apparel forms, with the goal of creating a multimedia work.
Outcome: Upon passing the exam, the students will be capable of doing research when realizing a work that involves using different types of media; they will be able to apply and combine different artistic media of expression and presentation in order to reach new artistic and design solutions in their work.
Contents of the course
Theoretical instruction:
  1. Case study analysis – the practice of conceptual fashion design.
  2. Researching variations and transpositions of apparel forms and the changes in costume functions according to the criteria for innovation.
  3. Communicological aspects of apparel forms.
  4. Analysis of the basic elements and the entire design process with a particular focus on envisioning a concept for the work.
  5. Types of scenic and artistic media of expression used in fashion presentations.
  6. Examining the concept of a work of art.
  7. Multimedia projects.
  8. Choosing a case study, determining the scope of the concept and an appropriate character of the work.
Practical instruction (Problem solving sessions/Lab work/Practical training):
  1. Individual approach and choice of theme and content depending on the case study analysis. Envisioning artwork – from the basic idea, through development, to the realization of a multimedia piece of art. Transposing apparel forms with the goal of changing costume function. The change of costume function in relation to the original concept. Examining the concept of a work of art: fashion film, artistic/fashion performance. Multimedia project based on the original concept.
