Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering Course code: MTFU | 6 ECTS credits

Basic information
Level of Studies: Undergraduate applied studies
Year of Study: 2
Semester: 4
Requirements: Completed pre-exams in the following courses: Mechanics and strength of materials and Statics of structures 1
Goal: Soil Mechanics aims at introducing students to the types and characteristics of the soil on which stuctures are founded. The objective of the course Foundation is to familiarize students with the methods of designing and building foundations.
Outcome: The curriculum of the course enables engineers to successfully perform professional assignments related to building foundations. In lectures students are shown different types of foundations and problems of their execution, so that later in practice they can find optimal solutions.
Contents of the course
Theoretical instruction:
  1. 2.Granulometric composition and limits of consistency. Indicators of soil physical condition.
  2. 3.Control of soil compaction. Mechanical properties of the soil: stresses in the soil.
  3. 4.Deformability of soil, shear strength. Propagation of stress in the soil.
  4. 5.Deformation of soil: soil subsidence. Bearing capacity of the soil below a foundation: subsidence criterion and failure criterion for soil.
  5. 6.Lateral stresses in the soil, pressure on rigid retaining walls.
  6. 7.Foundations: Principles for foundation design.
  7. 8.Strip foundations, spot foundations, common foundations.
  8. 9.Piles, foundation pits.
Practical instruction (Problem solving sessions/Lab work/Practical training):
  1. The content of theoretical instruction transferred into practical application through exercises and practical exercises in teaching bases
