Building Structures 1 Course code: GRK1 | 7 ECTS credits

Basic information
Level of Studies: Undergraduate applied studies
Year of Study: 1
Semester: 1
Requirements:
Goal: The course objective is introducing students to basic elements and structure assemblies and materialization of facilities in building construction, their mutual dependence and conditionality. The course studies the logic of structure setting, analyzesstructure assemblies and elements from the aspect of applied systems and construction technology as well as the materialisation of the space as a whole.
Outcome: Adopting the knowledge in this field students acquire foundations to follow instruction of the related courses (Building materials, Finishing works in construction, Design, Synthesis project), so thatthey can be successfully engaged in practical work in the field after completing the studies.
Contents of the course
Theoretical instruction:
  1. Types and elements of a structure assembly of the building. The logic of setting the structure, divisions and functional elements, systems and construction technology.
  2. Vertical and horizontal supporting elements of facilities of massive, skeletal and combined assembly of a building.
  3. Types of interfloor structures, construction technology and methods of load transmission.
  4. Floors and ceilings as the elements of interfloor ceiling and their role in space materialization.
  5. Materials and products that are used for forming the supporting structure. Concrete, steel and wood and their specificities in the formation of the building assembly. Rules for construction in seismic areas.
  6. Specific functional requirements of exterior and interior walls. Climatic zones and materialization of the facade walls. Ventilated and unventilated assemblies of facade walls.
  7. Elementary basics of funding. Choice of the depth and ways of funding with regard to the composition, stratification, soil support and other specific conditions. Shallow and deep foundation and special methods of funding.
  8. Insulation of walls and floors that are in contact with soil moisture and water.
  9. Basic principles of design and materialization of flat roofs: flat roof drainage, gutters, outlets, flumes. Passable and impassable flat roofs. Ventilated and unventilated assemblies of flat roofs. Standards.
  10. Openings in external and internal walls, windows and doors. Divisions, ways of presenting in projects, architectural details, specifications of joinery.
  11. Elements of space rearrangement. Outer and inner partition walls atthe facilities of different assembly and materialization. Mortars for masonry and plastering. Special mortars.
  12. Principles of designing facilities in building construction in order to meet heat-, sound-, water- and fire- protection in the function of space materialization.
  13. Chimneys and ventilation. Classical and modern systems.
Practical instruction (Problem solving sessions/Lab work/Practical training):
  1. Content of lectures transferred into practical application through exercises and practical exercises in teaching bases.
