Requirements:
Goal: Introducing students to the methods, techniques and materials used in drawing and painting still life; developing observational skills and a sense of the artistic, movement and proportion; becoming capable of free and individual artistic expression.
Outcome: Upon passing the exam, the students will be able to: perceive the character and the artistic challenges of a given setup (still life); compose the setup within a paper frame and provide a convincing rendition of it through a study (drawing or painting) using different techniques (charcoal, pencil, ink, watercolor, pastel, tempera, collage, combined technique); authentically represent their interpretation of the observed object.
Contents of the course
Theoretical instruction:
  1. Real and abstract in a work of art and its evaluation.
  2. Figure drawing. Composition – principles and limitation. Form and artistic expression.
  3. Geometric spirit: geometry and aesthetics, symmetry and asymmetry.
  4. The relationship between subject and technique. Priming the canvas – preparation.
  5. Modulating shapes (dark-light) and the color palette (value of tints and shades in a work of art).
  6. Mixing colors: primary with black and white; primary; primary and secondary; complementary colors.
  7. Color harmony and contrast. Chevreul’s laws on complementary colors.
  8. Paul Cézanne – master of modulation.
  9. Watercolor and pastel. Masters of light and capturing the moment.
  10. Art Informel. The relationship between technique, material and surface.
  11. The medieval spiritual space of a painting. Reverse perspective.
  12. Balance, types of balance and the left-right ratio within a painting.
  13. Composition and unity, domination and accent.
  14. Map analysis and correction of the works.
  15. Analysis of the works.
