Computer Networks Course code: 117074 | 7 ECTS credits

Basic information
Level of Studies: Undergraduate applied studies
Year of Study: 3
Semester: 6
Requirements:
Goal: Acquiring knowledge about the functioning of computer networks, basic protocols of network layers, how to form LAN network with the use of intermediate circuits, antennas, the functioning of the Internet as it is today universal transmission infrastructure.
Outcome: With the acquired knowledge, the student understands the work of computer networks at all levels, has a basis to be realized quickly administration and design of local networks.
Contents of the course
Theoretical instruction:
  1. Introduction: Historical overview (telephone and network, connection of telephone exchanges, numbering systems, systems signaling)
  2. Application layer: Network application architecture
  3. Transport layer: multiplexing and demultiplexing
  4. Network layer: forwarding and routing, virtual car networks and datagrams, routers, Internet protocol (IP), routing algorithms.
  5. Data connection layer and computer local area network: multiple access protocols, link layer addressing, Ethernet, PPP: point-to-point protocol, error detection and correction techniques
  6. Wireless and mobile networks: Wi-Fi, Wireless LAN - 802.11, cellular internet access, cellular standards I technologies, call routing to a mobile user
  7. Multimedia networking: applications, the flow of stored audio and video signals in real time, security in computer networks, principles of cryptography, authentication, integrity, creation digital signatures, access control: network barriers, security in many layers.
  8. Network management: network management infrastructure, standard Internet management framework, ASN.l, security and administration.
Practical instruction (Problem solving sessions/Lab work/Practical training):
  1. Examples are analyzed in auditory, demonstration and discussion exercises, and problems are considered tasks from theoretical teaching items. Based on theoretical knowledge, the student designs a given computer network in simulation package (Cisco Packet Tracer, GNS3) in order to master routing techniques, increase the level computer network security. Records the network traffic of the existing computer network (Wireshark, Xplico), analyzes and diagnoses the operation of the network and network protocols.
