Textile Materials Course code: TMA 113180 | 3 ECTS credits

Basic information
Level of Studies: Undergraduate applied studies
Year of Study: 2
Semester: 4
Requirements: Knowledge of textile fibers.
Goal: Introducing students to different types of textile materials (yarn, woven and knitted fabric and nonwovens). Studying the structure and characteristics of textile materials and the influence they have on the final appearance and utility of a textile product.
Outcome: Upon passing the exam, the students will be able to: identify different types of textile materials; determine the basic structural parameters of textile materials; adjust the type of textile material to its intended purpose.
Contents of the course
Theoretical instruction:
  1. Definition of yarn. Yarn classification.
  2. Yarns obtained through conventional spinning methods. Parameters which determine the structure of yarn. Yarn characteristics.
  3. Yarns obtained through non-conventional spinning methods.
  4. Complex, effective, special yarns. Introduction into nonwoven textile materials.
  5. Principles of obtaining nonwoven textile.
  6. Basic principles of fabric formation; definition of fabric; classification of fabric.
  7. Parameters which determine the structure of fabric. General indicators of fabric structure.
  8. Fabric properties.
  9. Basic principles of formation for knitted textile.
  10. Basic terms related to knitted textile; definition of knitted textile; geometry of knitted textile.
  11. Parameters which determine the structure of knitted textile.
  12. Properties of knitted textile.
Practical instruction (Problem solving sessions/Lab work/Practical training):
  1. Basic properties of yarn (yarn count, yarn twist, twist direction, twist coefficient). Comparing characteristics of short fiber yarns obtained through different spinning methods (combing and carding, wool and cotton). Comparing characteristics of filament yarns. Complex yarns and their classification. Classification and application of nonwoven textile. Fabric classification. Choosing samples according to the fabric classification chart. Determining structural parameters of a fabric; practical work with samples.
