Requirements:
Goal: Acquiring appropriate theoretical and practical knowledge of rail freight station organisation and technology, types of freight services, types of loads, principles for the formation and composition of freight trains, freight documentation, and freight wagon management, loading/unloading sidings and facilities, development strategies in the field of rail freight transport.
Outcome: Students will be able to understand the organisation and technology of rail freight station, to recognise capacities of the sidings and facilities for loading and unloading, to analyse the existing volume of work, to calculate and analyse the utilisation of station and industrial loading/unloading sidings and facilities.
Contents of the course
Theoretical instruction:
  1. Railway freight station services, organisation, and technology of work.
  2. Industrial, military, and departmental railway sidings, services, organisation, and technology of work.
  3. Types of load (part load, express parcels, full wagon load, special load).
  4. Types of services (express, rapid, deferred, and other services).
  5. Principles for the formation and composition of freight trains (block trains, mix trains, single wagon load traffic).
  6. Freight wagon utilisation management
  7. Documents required for domestic and international rail freight transport, e - freight services.
  8. Dimensioning and analysis of the utilisation of freight station and industrial loading/unloading sidings and facilities.
  9. Parcel terminals, sidings, facilities, objects for stocking, processing, and work of railway officials.
  10. Dimensioning and analysis of the utilisation of rail parcel stocking space.
  11. Documentation of the organisation and technology of station work.
  12. Value and importance of rail freight transportation.
  13. The modal split in freight transport.
  14. Trends and development strategies in the field of rail freight transport in the Republic of Serbia and EU.
Practical instruction (Problem solving sessions/Lab work/Practical training):
  1. Practical instruction is followed by a lecture program. 1. Case study of a single freight station. Overview of the organisation and technology of work. Analyses of the existing volume of loading and unloading of goods. 2. Calculation of utilisation of the existing tracks and storage capacities. Presentation of the technical and exploitation characteristics of freight wagons that are mostly used in the station.
