Requirements:
Goal: Introduction to the construction, characteristics, and functioning of the brake system of railway vehicles, as well as the most important devices in the brake system. Acquiring the knowledge necessary to understand the functioning of system components of railway vehicle brake, and checks of the brakes system and individual devices, to carry out the necessary repairs and maintenance.
Outcome: After completion of the course, the student should be able to apply the regulations related to brakes railway vehicles and identify brake malfunctions, assess the causes, and appropriately use them for troubleshooting procedures.
Contents of the course
Theoretical instruction:
  1. Brake systems of railway vehicles
  2. Braking technique and basic braking conditions
  3. The transfer of the braking action by means of compressed air
  4. The main braking conditions
  5. The process of braking
  6. The stopping distance and stopping time
  7. Thermal and other restrictions of the braking force
  8. Technical conditions that must be met by the brake railway vehicles
  9. Formation and transmission of the braking force: main and other braking devices.
  10. Types of brakes of railway vehicles
  11. Regulations (national and EU) relating to the brakes of railway vehicles
  12. Brake system inspection and testing device
  13. Maintenance of brake systems, main and other brake devices.
Practical instruction (Problem solving sessions/Lab work/Practical training):
  1. 1. Classification of the brakes and their characteristics. 2. Functional scheme of basic types of brakes: pneumatic brakes scheme of railway vehicles. 3. Principles of operation of basic vital devices: distributor, brake cylinder, mechanical transmission... 4. Gear ratio and the coefficient of efficiency. 5. Braking tables. 6. Examples of brake mass calculation. Calculation of brake mass. Calculation of the handbrake. 7. Visual identification of all elements of the brake system on real railway vehicles. 8. Technical and functional verification procedure the correctness of the brake system and individual devices.
