The Exploitation of the Railways 2 Course code: 117018 | 6 ECTS credits

Basic information
Level of Studies: Undergraduate applied studies
Year of Study: 2
Semester: 4
Requirements:
Goal: To gain knowledge for the organization, technology, and management of the railway traffic. The exploitation of railway stations. Use of models for determining the costs of shunting work in railway stations.
Outcome: Upon completion of the course, each student will learn the concepts (terminology) from the exploitation of railway freight and passenger traffic, to analyze the organization of work of stations as well as to define technological processes in them. To understands the importance of standardizing technological processes in the station and optimizing the technology of station operation, as well as its impact on costs. Student be able to apply the optimization methods to the technological process and the analysis of costs in stations.
Contents of the course
Theoretical instruction:
  1. Organization of station work
  2. Classification of freight trains
  3. Maneuvering operation of stations
  4. Interstation operation technology and collection train processing technology
  5. Technological process of work of passenger stations and technical passenger stations
  6. Technology of work operations in marshalling yards
  7. Division of the network into shunting areas and sections
  8. Information about trains coming to the station
  9. Train processing technology in marshalling yards
  10. Calculation of technological time of dismantling and formation of trains according to the work technology plan.
  11. Standardization of maneuvering duration on shunting neck and shunting banks
  12. The process of assembling a wagon
  13. Basics of operation technology and cost optimization at marshalling yards using network planning and management techniques (CPM and PERT methods).
Practical instruction (Problem solving sessions/Lab work/Practical training):
  1. During the exercises, a seminar paper related to the analysis of the work of the marshalling yard is prepared. On the example of a marshalling yard Belgrade and based on the input data on incoming trains, a graphical display is performed previous, main and final operations in the station as well as the process of wagon accumulation. The manner and principles are determined dismantling and formation of trains in the marshalling yard and analysis of the operating parameters of the marshalling yard is performed so as well wagons retention.
