Requirements:
Goal: Acquiring appropriate theoretical and practical knowledge of the types and characteristics of the transport market, transportation cost, and the impact of globalization on railway transport.
Outcome: Students will be able to apply the knowledge of transport economics. Students can make important decisions concerning the maximization of the benefits for users of transport services, rationalization of transportation costs, and optimization of transportation fares.
Contents of the course
Theoretical instruction:
  1. Traffic and transportation
  2. Economic dimensions and principles of transport organization.
  3. Impact of globalization on railway sector economics.
  4. Principles of cost management.
  5. Principles for the formation of charges.
  6. Charges for the usage of railway infrastructure from the point of view of the railway infrastructure manager.
  7. Charges for the usage of railway infrastructure from the point of view of the railway operator.
  8. Charging system for the usage of the railway infrastructure.
  9. Charging principles of minimum services
  10. Route categories and costs.
  11. Structure of charges for access to service facilities and rail related services.
Practical instruction (Problem solving sessions/Lab work/Practical training):
  1. 1. Auditory and calculation exercises, examples of cost and benefit calculations, examples of different charge structures for the usage of the railway infrastructure. 2. Preparation, and presentation of a seminar paper.
