Sound Recording
Goal:
Students should achieve basic level of theoretical and practical knowledge about technical and creative processes involved in sound postproduction and sound design.
Outcome:
Basic level of knowledge in hardware and software tools for sound design (Avid Pro Tools).
Contents of the course
Theoretical instruction:
- Introduction to sound design. Sound department in all phases of media production (preparation, recording and postproduction).
- Basics of dramaturgy of sound. Sound as a creative form of artistic expression.
- Sound postproduction studio. Basic configuration. Types of sound studios.
- Audio mixers. Basic configuration. Types of audio mixers. Signal flow chain.
- Audio processors. Basic types and working principles.
- Audio/video synchronization. Basic principles and systems.
- Audio signal measurement (level, frequency, phase, loudness…).
- Audio signal evaluation. Standards. How to listen sound. Objective and subjective control.
- Audio workstations. Complex studio audio systems vs working “in the box”.
- Basics of sound editing: Dialogue, ADR, ambiences, sfx, foley and music.
- Basics of sound mixing: pre-mixing and final mixing, mastering.
- Sound postproduction on film and TV. Workflow.
- Sound design in theater and radio. Workflow.
- Sound design in multimedia and new media. Workflow.
- Multichannel sound in media. Future of sound design.
Practical instruction (Problem solving sessions/Lab work/Practical training):
- Sound editing, ADR and foley recording for a 10 minute film insert.
- 5.1 mixing of a 10 minute film insert.
