Familiarity with basic principles in electronics, as well as Fourier series and Fourier transformations from the mathematics
Goal:
Gaining knowledge about basic principles in telecommunications regarding spectral analysis, signal processing and transsmission as well as quality of telecommunication link. Introduction to digital transmission systems.
Outcome:
Understanding of signal processing and transmission techniques. Gaining knowledge necessary for understanding topics in digital telecommunications.
Contents of the course
Theoretical instruction:
- Introductory lecture (organization and course syllabus, relation to other courses).
- Telecommunication system model. Information, measure of the information.
- Signals and spectra. Periodic and aperiodic functions (signals).
- Fourier series and Fourier transform signal analysis.
- Transfer function and impulse response of linear time-invariant systems. Distortion in linear and nonlinear systems.
- Signal processing: amplitude modulation – AM, types of AM and their properties.
- Angle modulation: frequency modulation – FM and phase modulation – PM.
- Colloquium.
- Pulse modulation: PAM, PDM, PPM.
- Sampling theorem, quantization and pulse coded modulation.
- Baseband digital transmission.
- Digital modulation.
- Error control coding.
- Multiplexing and multiple access techniques.
- Colloquium.
