Requirements:
Goal: Acquiring appropriate theoretical and practical knowledge of the elements of the railway infrastructure, railway rolling stock, principles of railway traffic organisation and technology, scheduling, train operations, railway traffic management, and exploitation indicators.
Outcome: Students will be able to recognize the elements of the railway infrastructure, main technical and exploitation characteristic of railway rolling stock, to understand the basic principles of railway traffic organisation and technology, scheduling, train operations, and traffic management, to calculate some of the exploitation indicators.
Contents of the course
Theoretical instruction:
  1. Basic terms and definitions in the railway traffic system.
  2. Railway system and subsystems.
  3. Elements of the railway infrastructure (railway tracks, signaling and safety devices and equipment, power supply system, telecommunication system, traffic control, and management system, etc.).
  4. Railway stations, and industrial stations and terminals (location, number and types of tracks, switches, signaling system, station technology of work, train movement, shunting operations, etc.).
  5. Railway signaling principles, train control equipment, and train detection equipment, and their impact on train movement and operation.
  6. Railway rolling stock
  7. Type of trains, the systematic numbering of trains
  8. Railway capacity analysis (railway line capacity, capacity of railway station).
  9. Basic exploitation indicators of the railway.
Practical instruction (Problem solving sessions/Lab work/Practical training):
  1. Practical instruction is followed by a lecture program. 
1. Calculation of main technological time.
2. Calculation of railway line capacity, and capacity of the railway station. 
3. Calculation of basic exploitation indicators of railway network operation.
