Goal: Acquiring theoretical and practical knowledge in the field of basic energy sources.
Outcome: Students will be trained to participate in projects of potential assessment and use of renewable energy sources.
Contents of the course
Theoretical instruction:
  1. Introductory considerations on the energy of the Sun.Organization and content of the subject. Basic concepts of renewable and non-renewable energy sources.
  2. Forms of the use of solar energy. Direct use of solar energy. Conversion of solar energy into heat energy (solar collectors). Conversion of solar energy into electricity (photovoltaic effect). Calculation of direct, diffused and reflected radiation components.
  3. The dependence of the parameters of the photovoltaic panel on the temperature. The degree of utilization of photovoltaic panels depending on the material from which it was built. Filling factor and MPPT photovoltaic cell.
  4. Measurement of the characteristic values of solar energy for a specific location in the design of photovoltaic systems. Types of photovoltaic systems.
  5. Technical-economic analysis of photovoltaic systems. Design of photovoltaic systems in island work. Design of photovoltaic systems connected to the electricity distribution network.
  6. Introductory considerations on wind energy. Electromechanical conversion of wind energy in wind turbines.
  7. The degree of exploitation of different types of wind turbines. Wind power of the wind turbine.
  8. The importance of an accurate assessment of wind energy resources. Mathematical modelling. Choosing a location to set up a wind turbine.
  9. Types of wind turbines and control of wind turbine power.
  10. Designing off-grid wind generators. Designing wind farms on the electricity distribution network. The impact of the construction of wind farms on the environment
  11. Introductory considerations on hydropower. Converting Potential Energy to Electricity.
  12. Characteristics of Small Hydro Power Plants (SHPPs). Location characteristics. Basic parts of SHPP.
  13. Factors for selecting the location of SHPP construction. Advantages of SHPP in relation to Large Hydro Power Plant.
  14. Voltage regulation and SHPP synchronization.
  15. Investment costs and costs of SHPP plants.
Practical instruction (Problem solving sessions/Lab work/Practical training):
  1. Practical training program follows the lecture.
